On a hot June day in 1981, a stray black kitten with
funny ears found her way to the home of Joe and
Grace Ruga in Lakewood California and mooched a
meal.  That cat would be named Shulamith and
would become the founder of the American Curl
breed.  All true American Curls can trace their family
tree back to “Shu”  and her offspring.

Over the years, extensive genetic research has
been done on the American Curl in both the United
States and abroad.  The genetic mutation that
causes the curled ear has not been associated with
any other genetic defect and the American Curl
remains a very healthy and natural breed.

The American Curl is currently accepted in all cat
registry associations.  It was accepted for
registration in CFA in 1986 and granted full
Championship status in 1993 in both coat varieties.
Since that time the American Curl has found a small
and dedicated following that has shown their Curls
with great success.  While American Curl breeders
are still somewhat rare, there are successful
catteries throughout the United States, Europe and
Asia.
